Working at Skirt, you can almost guarantee that no two days will be the same (which is something that I love about the job!). From media appointments to creative client mailings or TV segments, there’s always something new happening. Below is my “typical” daily routine.
7:30 a.m. – I strongly believe that no day should start without coffee, and I love grabbing a cup on the way to work to enjoy during my commute. One of my all-time favorite spots in the city for coffee or a morning treat is Stan’s (and how cute is their décor?)
8:00 a.m. – Officially start my morning work routine by catching up on my Instagram feed and a few unanswered emails. Surprisingly, I look to my Instagram feed for morning news as well as the obvious updates on pop culture and what’s trending. One of my go-to accounts for almost everything is Refinery29’s Instagram page!
11:00 a.m. – One of the most consistent parts of the job is weekly client calls. Today I had a call with my client, Hush Puppies, to go over updates and feedback from the spring blogger event that we planned in Dallas last week!
1:00 p.m. – Head over to NEWCITY Lincoln Park (another one of our clients) to facilitate a blogger appointment. There’s a lot that goes into each blog post, so I am always on-site at appointments to act as the liaison between the blogger and client and assist with whatever’s needed. Today I helped acquire a few props for a “Modern Girl’s Guide to Hosting with NEWCITY” post – like this beautiful custom bouquet from Mariano’s!
6:00 p.m. – If Chicago weather permits, I love running along the lake after work. There’s really nothing better than the view from the Diversey Harbor lakefront path after a busy day at work, especially when we’re gifted with a nice day!
What is your favorite way to end a work day?
I love a day that has a variety of different highlights – a quiet morning, a major check off your to-do list, and a lot of productivity. Here’s a recent sampling from one of my fall work weeks:
7 a.m. – The arrival of Daylight Saving Time and brighter mornings have made it just a little bit easier for this non-morning person to rise in the a.m. Making a quick cup of coffee and enjoying the beauty of this Pistil & Vine arrangement before heading in to the office.
11 a.m. – Pop over to WGN-TV studios to meet Women’s Health VP and publisher, Laura Frerer-Schmidt, for a segment about the great things the magazine’s charitable 10K, RUN10 FEED10, is doing.
12 p.m. – Back to my desk to log some serious hours catching up on email, reviewing documents, troubleshooting issues with colleagues, and brainstorming for clients. I swear by my Minnie & Emma notebooks to keep my notes organized!
4 p.m. – As you may have noticed, our website is undergoing a facelift. As the manager of the project, it’s time for me to review a recent round of edits. Can’t wait for you to see some of our incredible images, courtesy of our shoot with Jennifer Kathryn Photography.
6 p.m. – I’m lucky enough that I can walk to and from work (the joys of living in Bucktown!) and always love – no pun intended – to pass by the murals on the exterior of the neighborhood’s @properties, designed by Chicago-based artist Matthew Williamson.
Every day is pretty different for me as Office Director at Skirt. One day I may be strictly helping team members on their accounts and the next I will be interviewing candidates for our intern program, working on end-of-the-month billing or overseeing the office.
6:00 a.m. – I am typically a morning person so whenever the weather allows, I love to get up and go for a walk in the morning in my backyard which so happens to be Lincoln Park. It is a great way to gather my thoughts for the day and take in some fresh air.
8:30 a.m. – I love a good to-do list and crossing off items feels even better! A smoothie from Real Good Juice in Old Town is the perfect way to start the day. So yummy! Not to mention, looking at these amazing blooms by Cornelia McNamara.
11:00 a.m. – Off to Westfield Old Orchard to pick up items for an upcoming TV segment.
3:00 p.m. – After grabbing lunch and a soy chai from Goddess and Grocer down the street, it’s time to tackle the month’s billing. Lots of Excel documents and numbers!
6:00 p.m. – As recent newlyweds, my husband and I have been indulging in eating out after spending lots of nights at home wedding planning. We are close to some of our favorite restaurants like Gemini Bistro. On the plus side, a lot of them have outdoor seating, which I love!
7:15 a.m. // I typically start my day by grabbing coffee from my favorite local spot, Heritage Bicycles. Not only does this cute shop double as a coffee bar and bike shop, but their java is simply the best and a must for busy days.
8:00 a.m. // Head to WCIU for a “White Hot Fashion” morning segment, to show off looks for Marco Foster’s White Party. My job is to make sure the clothes are steamed, the models are dressed and ready to go, and that everything runs smoothly!
12:00 p.m. // Coordinate a holiday mailer for one of our clients, the adorable swaddle brand, buttermilk babies. From crinkle paper to stuff the delivery bags, to finding the perfect person at every publication to receive the surprise, every detail counts when sending along media mailers to long-lead outlets in NYC!
4:00 p.m. // Double-check that I have crossed the day’s to-do’s off of my list and start prioritizing for the next day. I love having a hand-written list of tasks that I need to accomplish in front of me. There’s something so satisfying about checking each item off of the list!
6:00 p.m. // One of my favorite things to do during free time is trying new dining spots in the city – Chicago has such a fun restaurant scene! One of my go-to spots is The Betty, located in the West Loop. Grabbing a cocktail and light bites with friends is the perfect way to end a busy day!
7:45 a.m. // I love to start my day off with a smoothie from Protein Bar. The Avo-Matcha smoothie has been my go-to recently.
1:00 p.m. // Head out to a meeting at Update Interiors to meet with the owner and snap some pictures of amazing new products that just arrived. I’m so obsessed with all the fashion books scattered around the store that I might have to go home with one!
2:30 p.m. // It wouldn’t be a trip to Oak Park without a stop at Sugar Fixé for some mid-day coffee and a quick little snack.
4:00 p.m. // Finally back at the office and time to catch up on emails. Oh, and to admire these beautiful peonies at my desk!
6:30 p.m. // Meet my friends for a birthday dinner at La Sardine, where the French Onion soup was to-die-for.
