Summer is coming to an end, sadly, but I’m nowhere near leaving behind the sweet tunes of my favorite sun-soaked Indie bands. When the snow starts to fall and the sweaters begin to take over my closet, I’m known to revert to the warm, fuzzy tracks of Frank Sinatra, but for now, I’ll enjoy the remaining days of this (Indian) summer – fingers crossed – with a few of my favorite feel-good songs:
- “Cool Kids” – Echosmith
- “From the Night” – Stars
- “Mother & Father” – Broods
- “Say My Name” – Odesza feat. Zyra
- “Every Other Freckle” – alt-J
What are you listening to?
As I’ve mentioned before, I pride myself on being an honest person and paying for all of my music on iTunes. That said, it’s becoming a larger part of my budget than I would like to admit. What can I say – my morning commute needs the perfect soundtrack! Here are a few purchases that were totally worth $1.29.
“Reflections” by MisterWives
I have been listening to MisterWives non-stop for about a month now and am just waiting for them to take over the radio. Their songs have meaningful lyrics and catchy beats – what more could a girl want? I recommend you check out their #JamInTheVan videos from this year’s SXSW (this is a favorite) – they’re enchanting.
“In My City” by Ellie Goulding
This one goes out to my friend Christy, who in one late night dance party this spring, made me a believer in the magic that is Ellie Goulding. This song is perfect for a “small-town-girl-moves-to-the-big-city-and-spins-around-Times-Square” movie montage. It will also be playing when I move to London to become the newest cast member on “Made in Chelsea.”
“So Now What” by The Shins
I’m 99% sure Zach Braff either a) sold his soul to The Shins or b) actually is The Shins. Homeboy loves a good Shins diddy, and this one from his most recent film “Wish I Was Here” is a total gem.
“Night Like This” by LP
This song is EVERYTHING. Amazing lyrics, a killer beat, unique vocals. LP is unlike anyone else I’ve heard and I am crossing my fingers she visits Chicago soon so I can see her perform live. Until then, I’ll just watch her on my favorite web series “Throwing Shade.”
“Just One of the Guys” by Jenny Lewis
Before she released this cheeky tune a few weeks ago, Jenny starred in the classic film “Troop Beverly Hills” and dated Jake Gyllenhaal back in 2001. Need I say more?
“Gooey” by Glass Animals
I have my friend Holly to thank for introducing me to many of my favorite artists (Charli XCX, Tame Impala, the list goes on) but when she told me to listen to a song titled “Gooey,” I doubted her. Big mistake! You win again, Holly.

After surviving my first real winter bundled inside under layers and layers of blankets, I’ve made a promise to myself to get back into summer shape this year – as cliché as that may sound. To help me stay true to my word, I’ve carefully curated a workout playlist, aptly named “On the Run,” to accompany me in my treks through the city. Featuring an array of late ’90s West Coast rap, early ’00s R&B, and a sprinkling of today’s pop-iest tunes, here are the top five songs that get me excited to be on the move.
“Partition” (Album Version) by Beyonce
I once read that Bey elevates her workouts by running on the treadmill while singing, and when her songs come through my headphones, it takes everything in me to not try this myself. If you haven’t heard the extended album version of “Partition” yet, I suggest you download it now and try not to start moving, especially when that beat drops about half way through.
“Fancy” by Iggy Azelea featuring Charli XCX
From the amazing back beat to the catchy chorus, this song reminds me how fun being fancy can be.
“Trumpets” by Jason Derulo
This poppy number lifts my spirits when I start feeling a bit tired.
“Look at Me Now” by Chris Brown featuring Busta Rhymes & Lil Wayne
Trying to keep up (or even understand) Busta’s rap is a great distraction during a long workout.
“The Man” by Aloe Blacc
This song makes you feel like a champion and is a great way to finish off a long workout.
What music motivates you during a workout?
The (official) start of summer is almost upon us – which means I’m in serious need of updating my music portfolio instead of YouTube-ing jams on a whim (true story). As the most coveted season of our existence (you didn’t already black out the polar vortex, did you?) arrives, I plan to sit back and enjoy songs that simply make me want to bust out a fake mic and sing along. Warm up those pipes and join me with these catchy tunes:
Ariana Grande featuring Iggy Azalea – “Problem”
I can’t help that I’m a teenybopper at heart, but this pounding punch of pop is so addicting! I sing along as loud as I can, even though there’s NO chance I’ll reach Ariana’s throat-clenching notes. #sorryimnotsorry
Bruno Mars – “Treasure”
It may be because I’m headed to his concert this week, or it may be because this song is full of spirit and spunk, but regardless, I’m bringing this back for summer playlists.
Christine Grimmie – “Can’t Help Falling In Love”
Is nonstop-repeat a thing? Can it be? I occasionally watch “The Voice,” but one night, my husband and I stumbled upon one of the final episodes in which Christina shakes up this Elvis classic. It’s mind-blowing. Sometimes I wish I could travel back in time to somehow force her to sing this at my wedding – it’s THAT good.
Pharrell Williams featuring Miley Cyrus – “Come Get It Bae”
If you don’t think Pharrell Williams is the most adorable/insanely talented music guru, we probably should just stop right here. I mean, he’s wearing a bathrobe on his album cover for crying out loud.
Miranda Lambert featuring Carrie Underwood – “Somethin’ Bad”
What’s better than the badass and sweetheart of country music coming together for a solid showing? I’m all about girl power, especially the feet-stomping kind.
What songs are you singing these days? Happy summer!
As I was going through my music to pick out five songs on my playlist…I realized that almost all of my music is country. The timing worked out perfectly because country music always reminds me of summer, and it looks like it is (finally) on its way! These are the perfect songs to complement a BBQ gathering, or while you’re basking on top of a boat:
Lynyrd Skynyrd – “Sweet Home Alabama”
This is an oldie but goodie and is a great sing-a-long!
Zac Brown Band – “Chicken Fried”
My cousin introduced me to ZBB back in college, and I have been a huge fan ever since. The lyrics always give me the chills, so be sure to listen to them closely!
Darius Rucker – “Wagon Wheel”
I love me some Hootie, and this song always puts me in a great mood.
Corey Smith – “If I Could Do It Again”
I went to my first Corey Smith concert this year after my boyfriend and brother kept telling me how great he is. I was thoroughly surprised and have really enjoyed listening to his music.
Jake Owen – “Barefoot Blue Jean Night”
This song reminds me of the perfect summer night and being up at the lake in Wisconsin.
